Help Shape The Future Of Radstock & Radco

Regeneration of Radco store – we need your support!

RadstocK ReGen Aug 2019 -03  RadstocK ReGen Aug 2019 -02

As you will know, we submitted a planning application in December 2018 to replace the Radco store with a more modern shop that would fulfil the expectations of today’s shoppers.

Our loyal customers, who are familiar with the Radco building will be very aware of its poor condition and the dire need to replace it with a building that is far more suitable for modern day retailing and also of an appropriate quality to be the Head Office of the Radstock Co-operative Society. Those of you who visited the shop towards the end of last week will have witnessed the numerous buckets and containers that were carefully positioned on the shop floor to capture the rainwater that penetrated the flat roof!  This is an ongoing battle, despite the continuous investment in repairs and maintenance.

At the AGM, I regrettably informed members that Radco was the only one of our stores that had made a loss last year.  You will appreciate, that we cannot allow this to continue and the only solution is to replace the store with a smaller, better designed building to ensure that we can remain on our home site.

We have received very positive feedback from members and the local community in response to our intentions for the Radstock site. The Council (Bath and North East Somerset) has also been supportive of our regeneration plans and we have worked with them to make improvements to the original submission.

The original scheme was for a more contemporary approach using modern materials. However, further discussions with Council Officers have evolved the appearance of the new Radstock store into a more traditional design that responds well to the Victorian buildings in the town centre. We have also enhanced the landscaping proposals and worked with ‘Radstock in Bloom’ to provide additional planters and a new heritage tree that will be planted at the heart of a new public space outside the store.

The planning application drawings are also available to view on the Bath and North East Somerset Council website by clicking here. We have recently submitted this revised design to Bath and North East Somerset Council and are waiting for the planning application to be decided at the Planning Committee in Bath at 2pm on 23rd October 2019. We will need to be able to show to the Councillors how much local support there is for this scheme.

If you are supportive of our plans to improve and re-generate the Radstock store, we would greatly appreciate it if you could show your support by doing one (or all!) of the following:

  • Visit the Council at development_management@bathnes.gov.uk quoting reference ‘18/05623/OUT Radco’ and let them know that you support the scheme and why (e.g. the scheme ensures that the shop can stay for many more years, the design is right for Radstock, good for local economy, new homes and retail unit is what town needs etc.)

  • Visit the Councils Website by clicking this link ‘18/05623/OUT Radco’ and let them know that you support the scheme and why (e.g. the scheme ensures that the shop can stay for many more years, the design is right for Radstock, good for local economy, new homes and retail unit is what town needs etc.)

  • Contact your local Councillor (if you live in BaNES area) and explain just how important it is to retain Radco within the centre of the town.

  • Attend the Planning Committee at 2pm on the 23rd October at the Brunswick Room in the Guildhall in Bath to show your support.
