Last Friday 31st August Mrs Sue Barnard, a Director of Radstock Co-operative Society, presented the Friends of Warminster Hospital with a cheque for £1,000. This and other cheques given to other hospital charities and doctors surgeries represented the receipts from the 5p plastic bag levy on customers shopping at Co-operative stores within the Radstock trading area during the past year. This included the Co-operative Convenience Store recently opened in Victoria Road, Warminster.
Charles Lane, Chairman of the Friends, thanked Mrs Barnard for coming to Warminster to make the presentation. He and Sister Lesley Benfield from the Hospital’s Longleat Ward explained how the Friends support the Hospital, the Avenue Surgery and Community Care in ways not covered by the NHS. Mrs Barnard was shown the list of donations by the Friends during the past ten years that is in the Hospital Reception waiting room.
Sister Benfield explained that the role of Longleat Ward and the other hospital departments was one of providing patient care & comfort, rehabilitation and also palliative care where needed. Longleat ward provides 25 beds and the majority age of patients is over 65 years old, but younger patients are also cared for. Sister Benfield expressed the hospitals gratitude to Mrs Barnard for the Coop’s very generous donation and to Col Lane for all the support given by The Friends of Warminster Hospital.
The Chairman told Mrs Barnard that: “Donations such as that made by the Co-operative Society were invaluable in helping the Friends to respond to nearly every request made by the Hospital and others, and he and the Friends were extremely grateful”.
