Radco to relocate to temporary store

Radstock Co-op announced to its staff last week that they were forging ahead with the next phase in the development of the Radstock Town Centre which is to close the doors of the existing Radco store building and relocate to temporary premises.

The planned closure of the Radco store at the end of August, will be a sad day for many as it has served the local community well for over 60 years providing a mix of food and non-food ranges to meet most shopping needs. However, many will agree that the building is past its ‘best before date’ and the plans for a modern, purposebuilt shopping centre will be welcome news indeed.

Don Morris, CEO for the Society said, “We continue to work in close partnership with Bath and North East Somerset planning authority to finalise the finer details of the new development and have made much progress. However, this is an ambitious and large-scale project and we must approach it on a phased basis and in a measured way as our commitment has always been to provide the people of Radstock and our loyal customers with a place locally for their shopping needs. We were adamant that our temporary store should be in the town centre which really narrowed the search for premises. However, we feel that we have found an ideal unit in Marcroft Court next to the Post Office sorting office which will provide a comprehensive, convenience store offering with much more, including a Post Office, ATM, instore bakery, Costa Coffee Express etc. We are keen to minimise the disruption to our customers and aim to keep the period between the closure of the Radco store and the opening of the temporary store as short as possible. Many of our colleagues will transfer to the temporary store whilst others will relish the opportunity for a change and accept redeployment options to our other local retail outlets. In this respect, we have already commenced discussions with staff to match individuals’ preferences and personal circumstances to the positions we have available. Our colleagues have played a major part in the success of the Radco store over the years and have shown such dedication and commitment, especially during the recent coronavirus pandemic and we welcome their involvement in the next stage of the Radstock journey. During the period between the closure of Radco and opening of the temporary store, which we anticipate will be about a week whilst we stock and merchandise the temporary store, we hope our customers will utilise our other local stores at Westfield (Elmtree Avenue and The Fosseway), Peasedown St John, Chilcompton, Coleford and others.”

The temporary store is due to open early September and will operate with extended opening hours of 7am to 10 pm, Monday to Sunday. The Travel Department and some other support functions will remain at the former store for the time being. Customers and colleagues will be able to continue use of the Radco carpark until demolition work commences.
